In quotes: Alabama shooting

A gunman has killed at least nine other people and himself in southern Alabama, in one of the deadliest shootings in recent US history. Below are comments from eyewitnesses and local officials.

ALABAMA STATE SENATOR ANNE SMITH

He was just driving down the street shooting at people sitting on their porches. A family was just sitting on the porch and they were shot.

UNNAMED EYEWITNESS, GENEVA COUNTY

He did shoot at my brother in law, who ducked down behind a car and was able to save his life

GENEVA POLICE CHIEF FRANKIE LINDSAY

He pulled out a... looked like to me a AR-15 or maybe M-16 automatic weapon and fired a burst of rounds into my vehicle, and also my other officer's vehicle.

About 11 rounds hit my vehicle and seven rounds I think maybe hit by my other trimmed vehicle. And some of the shrapnel from the bullets did enter my shoulder.

CHRIS MURPHY, ALABAMA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY

This is a horrific thing for the whole state, but that's a rural community and I'm sure it's a close knit community and the governor's office wants to make sure that every resource available to the state are available to Geneva County

CLAY KING, MAYOR OF SAMSON

What I'm focusing on is people here in the town, making sure they feel comfortable... I've lived here 44 years and never, never dreamed of this happening.
