As it happened: Obama inauguration

Barack Obama has been inaugurated as the 44th president of the United States in a ceremony at the Capitol building in Washington DC. After an official lunch, the new president was driven down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House, stopping en route to walk with his wife Michelle.

The route was lined with spectators. More than one million people have converged on the capital for the celebrations which are being policed by more than 20,000 security officers, including police, military and national guard.
