Baby for Palin's teenage daughter

Johnston and Palin have reportedly been dating for three years

Bristol Palin, the 18-year-old daughter of Alaska governor and former White House hopeful Sarah Palin, has given birth to a son, reports say.

Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston was born on Sunday, weighing in at 7 lb 4 oz (3.3 kg), People magazine reported.

Mrs Palin's office declined to comment on what it called a family matter.

The father is apprentice electrician Levi Johnston, who has been dating Miss Palin for three years and is reportedly keen to take their child hunting.

Both mother and child were reported to be doing well, People quoted family sources as saying.

The Alaska governor, a mother-of-five, disclosed the pregnancy three days after she was nominated as the Republican vice-presidential candidate in September.

Mrs Palin, a social conservative who is opposed to abortion, said in a statement at the time her daughter would keep the child and was to get married.

Mrs Palin and her husband Todd said: "Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realise very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family."

The couple are reportedly planning to marry in 2009.
