Robber sprung from jail by mom
Jay Sigler under arrest
Prison escapee Jay Sigler suffered cuts and bruises after his getaway car crashed
An armed robber who police say was sprung from jail by his 58-year-old mother has been recaptured.

Sandra Sigler, who has also been arrested, is believed to have organised the prison breakout in Florida in which a juggernaut cab was used to smash through several perimeter fences.

Sandra Sigler was arrested soon after the breakout
The stolen truck rammed four nine-foot (2.75 metre) fences at a maximum-security prison in the Everglades, 20 miles (32km) west of Miami.

When the driver reached the prison yard he threw a gun to Mrs Sigler's 31-year-old son, Jay, and began firing at jail guards.

Jay Sigler, who is serving 20 years for armed robbery, ran to Mrs Sigler's car, which was parked near the perimeter fence.

Mrs Sigler and two friends, John Beaston and Kelly Mitchell, were arrested at a nearby shopping mall after apparently switching cars.

High speed chase

Detective Rudy Espinosa said two prison guards were treated for injuries they received while diving for cover. She said other guards returned fire and Jay Sigler was also hurt.

The convict and a friend, Christopher Michaelson, who was recently released from the jail, were arrested later after a Hollywood-style car chase.

The pair were spotted at Pompano Beach, near Fort Lauderdale, which is about 40 miles (65 km) from the prison.

They sped off when they realised they were being followed and turned into an alley before careering through a stop sign and onto a busy street.

Their car collided with another vehicle, killing its 55-year-old driver, and they were apprehended as they tried to recover from the impact.

Michaelson has been charged with first degree murder over the death of the motorist.
