The first significant aid has arrived in Gonaives, Haiti's fourth-largest city, which was inundated with water when Hanna struck last Monday.

An Associated Press reporter in the city said safe drinking water was in very short supply, and fetid carcasses of drowned farm animals were strewn in soupy floodwaters.

Tens of thousands of people have endured days without clean water or food.
