US police are questioning a student from Delaware State University about a campus shooting in which two other students were wounded.

The student being questioned is one of two sought by police.

Classes were cancelled for the day and students were ordered to stay inside their dormitories as police searched for the gunman.

A female student is in a serious condition and a male student is said to be stable following the shooting.

University police chief James Overton said the male student was shot in the ankle but was refusing to answer questions.

The female student has "potentially life-threatening" wounds, university spokesman Carlos Holmes said.

An official with the Kent County Emergency Services said the female student had been wounded in the abdomen.

The two students were returning from a cafe after midnight on Thursday when they were shot, Mr Overton said.

Between four and six shots had been fired, he added.

Student Alex Bishoff, 20, was in his dormitory room when he heard five gunshots.

He said about 15 minutes later campus authorities told students to stay in their rooms.

Students who were not on the Dover campus at the time of the shooting have been told to stay away.

The university authorities said they would still provide essential services to campus residents during the lock-down.

Delaware State said it had improved security procedures after the mass shooting at Virginia Tech University in April, in which 32 people died.

Virginia Tech officials were criticised for not notifying students quickly enough about that incident.
