Gore and Bush consolidate lead
![]() Vice President Al Gore is well ahead in the poll
By Washington correspondent Paul Reynolds
The latest opinion poll on the US presidential candidates suggests that Vice President Al Gore will crush rival Democrat, former Senator Bill Bradley, in a major round of primaries on Tuesday. It also indicates that, in the race for the Republican Party nomination, Texas Governor George Bush is doing well against Senator John McCain, from Arizona.
The poll, conducted by Zogby International, shows Mr Bush in a strong position ahead of the crucial round of state primaries taking place on what is known as "Super Tuesday" next week.
Mr Bush is even edging ahead of Mr McCain in New York and Connecticut, although these forecasts are within the margin of statistical error. Of the eight states polled, Mr McCain was in front only in Massachusetts. Neck and neck In California, Mr Bush is not just getting strong support from Republican Party voters, but is neck and neck in a so-called popularity poll in which non-Republicans can participate. The poll is further evidence of the renewed strength of the Bush campaign, which was thrown into confusion by a defeat in the Michigan primary. John McCain seems to have hurt himself by his fierce attacks on right-wing Repubican Christians. But he has surprised pollsters before, and is not to be written-off. Bill Bradley, on the other hand, looks likely to be swamped by Vice President Gore on Tuesday. If that happens, his campaign could be at an end. |
