Nine die in Colombia battles

Reports from Colombia say at least nine soldiers have been killed in fighting between government troops and Marxist rebels.

The army said intense battles were still going on in the jungles of southern Colombia, and they'd called for air strikes over the area.

President Ernesto Samper held an emergency meeting with cabinet members and army leaders to discuss the fighting, which comes only days before Colombians are due to vote in congressional elections.

The rebel groups have urged voters to boycott the poll.
