Heavy rains caused flooding in the streets of Cabo San Lucas

Tropical storm Paul has hit the coast of the Mexican mainland after skirting around the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula.

It came ashore near La Reforma on the western coast, after being downgraded from hurricane status.

Earlier, Paul lashed the resort of Los Cabos on the peninsula with heavy rain and winds of nearly 30mph (45km/h).

Paul could still cause flash flooding after it dumps rain on the Sierra Madre mountains, forecasters say.

Tropical storm Paul, which reached winds of 110 mph (177km/h) on Monday, has reportedly killed two people.

A 65-year-old American man was swept off a beach at Los Cabos by a wave and is presumed dead, US officials told Reuters news agency.

A 23-year-old Mexican fisherman is also said to have died on Monday after slipping off wet rocks.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for Sinaloa on the western mainland where three people were killed by Hurricane Lane last month.

Both Lane and Paul narrowly missed the nearby resort town of Mazatlan.
