A Californian man has been held on bail of $1m after being arrested for allegedly stalking the singing star Barbra Streisand.

Wendal Wall, 28, whom Streisand claims has been following her for years, is due to appear in court on Tuesday.

Miss Streisand had set off on a shopping expedition with her husband, the actor James Brolin, when she noticed a man in a car was following her.

He allegedly took photographs of her as the couple shopped for a new Land Rover.

A few hours later, Miss Streisand claims, the same man pursued them near their home in the Californian city of Malibu.

Police later arrested Wendal Wall, who it is thought lives near to Miss Streisand.

Detectives would not comment on their reasons for setting bail at $1m, but the singer's publicist claimed the man had been stalking Miss Streisand for years, following her to five different cities.

His appearance in court comes a day after a young woman appeared before a judge in Los Angeles having been charged with stalking the actor Brad Pitt.
