The United States welcomed the third millennium with a mixture of public enthusiasm, spectacular celebrations mixed with showbiz, style and glamour.




New York led the way with thousands pouring into Times Square to watch a giant crystal ball, illuminated from within with coloured bulbs, drop slowly down a pole.




Fireworks exploded from the top of skyscrapers and around Manhattan island, lighting up the Statue of Liberty.




Three tonnes of confetti poured down on the revellers in a blizzard that was almost blinding.




In Washington, President Clinton joined residents of the capital to watch a fireworks display to ring in the new year.




A spectacular display lit up the Washington Monument as part of the Millennium Gala.




Traffic clogged the 6-mile Las Vegas Boulevard on the Strip in Las Vegas with. Barbara Streisand, Elton John and Bette Midler were among the celebrities to make an appearance.




Alex Rethore kissed her boyfriend Robert Schmitz under the Eiffel Tower of the Paris Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip moments before midnight.




In Los Angeles, Mayor Richard Riordan and comedian Jay Leno switched on the illuminated Hollywood sign which was lit up in a blaze of colours.
