Protests overshadow WTO talks
Riot police were on hand but protests were largely peaceful
Several thousand people have taken to the streets of Seattle to protest against the effects of global free trade on the eve of talks between members of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
Their common theme was that the free trade espoused by the WTO is not fair trade, especially for poorer workers and countries. They accused the WTO of worsening environmental and development problems. Some 50,000 critics of global capitalism arrived in the west-coast city at the weekend, in what is being dubbed the "Battle in Seattle".
