In general, President Bush and his administration have performed above average, in my opinion.

The past twelve months have been characterized by major accomplishments as well as disappointments.

A major accomplishment is the appointment of a single person - John Negroponte - charged with putting order into this country's splintered intelligence community.

The signing by the president of a transportation bill designed to address our failing infrastructure as well as the recent approval of the Iraqi constitution and efforts to restructure the United Nations also represent accomplishments.

However, the biggest success of all is the recent appointment of a conservative judge, John Roberts, as chief justice of the Supreme Court.

I was disappointed at the initial federal response to Hurricane Katrina.

US VOTERS' VIEWS
I was also unimpressed at our lack of an open and frank discussion with the Chinese on their currency's undervaluation and their unfair trade policies.

Undeniably, the presidency has suffered due to the recent indictment of Lewis Libby, who has some serious explaining to do to a jury.

However, it is likely that the confirmation hearings of Judge Samuel Alito will preoccupy the nation's attention as this evidently qualified person, in conjunction with Chief Justice Roberts, will have profound consequences on the lives of ordinary Americans for decades to come.
