Los Angeles officials have dismissed a claim that Reggie, the elusive alligator who has avoided capture for weeks, has finally been nabbed.
On Tuesday, a man posing as wrangler Jay Young told media outlets that he had caught the seven-foot (2.1m) reptile on the shore of Lake Machado.
But contacted later at his Colorado alligator farm, Mr Young said he had not been in LA recently.
Reggie's antics in one of the city's lakes have made him a local celebrity.
Dozens of people have flocked to the lake to try to catch a glimpse of the reptile, which is believed to have be an abandoned pet.
The LA authorities turned to wranglers to capture the alligator after repeatedly failing to catch it.
