The relief effort is already under way
Emergency appeals have been launched by US aid agencies in the wake of the destruction wrought by Hurricane Katrina.

Thousands are feared dead in the city of New Orleans alone and over $25bn dollars of damage may have been caused.

The US government has urged people to contribute generously to aid agencies assisting with the relief effort.

Volunteer agencies provide a wide variety of services after disasters, such as shelter, food, housing repair, crisis counselling and childcare.
