Star Trek actor's wife found dead

William Shatner: Tried to revive his wife (left)

The wife of Star Trek actor William Shatner has been found dead in the swimming pool of their home in Los Angeles.

Former model Nerine Shatner, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene on Monday evening.

Police said her husband discovered her after he arrived home at 2215 local time (0515 GMT) and found her at the bottom of the pool.

Shatner, 68, called emergency services and tried in vain to revive her.

Authorities are treating the apparent drowning as an accident.

Police lieutenant Adam Bercovici said: "She was home alone for a short period of time and accidentally drowned while swimming in the family pool."

Nerine was Shatner's third wife. They married in November 1997.

Speaking outside his home to reporters on Tuesday, Shatner said: "I arrived home and found my wife at the bottom of the pool.

"My beautiful wife is dead. She meant everything to me. Her laughter, her tears and her joy will remain with me the rest of my life."

Police said investigations were continuing into the incident, and the cause of death would be determined by an autopsy.
