Electoral violence in Jamaica

At least twelve people were injured in Jamaica when rival party supporters exchanged fire in the run up to the general election to be held later this month.

Police said the fire broke out when supporters of the governing People's National Party and the main opposition party, Jamaican Labour Party, converged in the August town area of the capital, Kingston.

A record number of candidates have put their names forward to contest the general election.
