Four members of one of the US Navy's elite units have been charged with abusing prisoners in Iraq, one of whom later died in Abu Ghraib prison.
The four men, who are members of a Sea-Air-Land unit, known as Navy Seals, have not been identified.
Naval official Commander Jeffrey Bender said more sailors might be also charged after an investigation into the death of another Iraqi detainee.
These are the first charges of prisoner abuse to be made against the US Navy.
Seven US Army reservists have been charged with the abuse of inmates at Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad.
Military investigators also have recommended charges against dozens of others in the army.
