Sunday, May 16, 1999 Published at 20:59 GMT 21:59 UK World: Americas Argentina wants NATO ground troops The president of Argentina, Carlos Menem, has urged NATO to launch a ground invasion of Yugoslavia to avoid further accidental civilian casualities in air strikes. Speaking on Argentinian radio, Mr Menem said using ground troops could break the resolve of the Yugoslav president, Slobodan Milosevic. Mr Menem's comments come after NATO acknowledged it bombed the Kosovo village of Korisa, and expressed regrets for any civilian casualties. Argentina is not a member of NATO, but, under Mr Menem, it has been a military ally of the United States. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
