California election: In quotes
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Schwarzenegger: "I will not let you down"
Austrian-born actor Arnold Schwarzenegger has won the race to become governor of California, pledging to become a "governor of the people".

Here is how his victory has been described.

"I want to be the governor for the people. I want to represent everybody."

"We have tough choices ahead. The first choice that we must make is the one that will determine our success. Shall we rebuild our state together or shall we fight amongst ourselves, create even deeper divisions and fail the people of California?

"Well, let me tell you something - the answer is clear. For the people to win, politics as usual must lose."

"I will not fail you, I will not disappoint you and I will not let you down."

California governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger

"We have had a lot of good nights over the last 20 years, but tonight the people did decide that it's time for someone else to serve and I accept their judgment."

"I'm calling on everyone... to put the chaos and division of the recall behind us and do what's right for this great state of California."

Democratic incumbent Gray Davis

"As I see it, we campaign as partisans but we govern as Californians."

"I know how to balance a budget and I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work."

California Democrat Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante

"I think it'll be difficult for him to understand that it's not movies and it's real life and maybe he's not the Terminator or whoever... maybe he's the Kindergarten Cop in Sacramento."

California state senator John Burton

"Someone who's a foreigner in his country, who has an unpronounceable name and can become governor of the biggest American state - that's not nothing."

French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy

"It's amazing, I'm surprised at the margin of his victory.

"It's much more decisive than I would have expected. Arnold has really tapped into a reservoir of voter discontent."

University of Southern California law professor Elizabeth Garrett

"He has been less than truthful with the people of California about what it's going to take to restore fiscal integrity and get the economy going."

"I'm going to fight for what I think is right for rebuilding this economy. I will give no quarter in that respect."

Democratic state treasurer Phil Angelides
