Canada ratifies Kyoto Protocol
Canada has ratified the Kyoto Protocol aimed at reducing emissions of gases widely considered to be responsible for warming the planet.

The Prime Minister, Jean Chretien, signed the international agreement after it received strong backing from the Canadian House of Commons.

The accord has already passed into international law, but the leading emissions producer, the United States, has rejected it.
