Thursday, November 6, 1997 Published at 16:43 GMT World: Americas Dominican Republic gets tough on immigrants
The government of the Dominican Republic says it may begin deporting illegal immigrants in the country - thought to number up to 300,000.
Most of those affected are from Cuba, Haiti and China.
Several Cubans have already been deported.
Until recently, the Dominican authorities granted visas to all Cubans arriving in the country who asked for political asylum.
But they've now decided to repatriate all Cubans who arrived after May of this year.
Dominican officials said this reflected improved relations with Cuba after the two countries opened consulates in each other's capitals and signed immigration accords
