Fresh suicide attempts in Guantanamo
A series of suicide attempts among detainees at the Guatanamo Bay camp have left the United States military concerned about the mental health of the al-Qaeda and Taleban suspects detained there.

A military spokesman said guards had intervened to prevent some of the detainees from killing themselves, but he declined to give details.

Two months ago, doctors said there had been at least 30 suicide attempts at the Guantanamo detention centre.

The US is holding nearly 600 prisoners at Guantanamo, none of whom has been charged.

It says they were unlawful combatants not entitled to protection under the Geneva Conventions.

Human rights groups have demanded the men be either put on trial or given the full status of prisoners of war.
