Honduras clears banana pesticides
A commission established by the Honduran government to mediate in a strike by banana workers has ruled that pesticides the workers objected to are safe. More than 2,000 employees at a subsidiary of the American company, Chiquita, went on strike this week, saying that a chemical used in packaging bananas was harmful. Their union leader, Oscar Amaya, told the BBC that in the light of the commission's ruling the workers would probably end the strike on Monday. But he added that his members still had concerns about the long-term impact of the pesticides. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
