Paraguayan police chief removed

The President of Paraguay, Luis Gonzalez Macchi , has dismissed the country's chief of police over the alleged torture and kidnapping of two left-wing politicians.

The men, Juan Arrom and Anuncio Marti, who were discovered on Wednesday in a house on the outskirts of the capital, Asuncion, said they'd been kidnapped and tortured by unidentified men.

Correspondents say suspicion has fallen on the Paraguayan security forces, whose members have been linked to numerous human rights violations.

The head of police denied any wrongdoing, but admitted that his force had failed to investigate the case properly. Human rights groups have called for a radical overhaul of the security forces to help restore public trust in the police.
