Hurricane Georges hits Cuba

Hurricane Georges hit the eastern end of Cuba on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, causing serious floods and at least one fatality.

The damage and lives lost seems to have been far less than on other Caribbean islands, where over a hundred deaths are reported.

The heavy rains accompanying the hurricane fell in an area that has been suffering a severe drought for several months.

Hurricane Georges is now heading out over the Florida straits, and residents in the coastal areas of Florida have been advised to evacuate their homes.
