A judge in Texas has ordered President George W Bush's daughter, Jenna, to perform community service and take an alcohol awareness course after the 19-year-old pleaded no contest to a charge of underage drinking.

Jenna Bush appeared before an Austin Municipal Court to answer a charge of being a minor in possession of alcohol, which is punishable by a fine of up to $500 or community service.

Undercover Austin police officers last month discovered the president's daughter, who is an undergraduate at the University of Texas, drinking a beer at a bar in the town of Austin.

The legal drinking age in Texas is 21.

Judge Elizabeth Earle ordered Jenna to complete eight hours of community service, attend a six-hour alcohol education course and pay $51.25 in court fees.

Jenna's father had a reputation as a hard drinking party-goer during his university days when he was a member of a fraternity known as the Skull and Bones.

But in 1986 Mr Bush appeared to go through a religious awakening at the time of his 40th birthday.
