UN urges DR Congo and Rwanda to investigate massacres

The United Nations Security Council has called on the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda to investigate their own citizens in connection with massacres of Hutu refugees.

The refugees -- who included Hutu militiamen and soldiers --had fled from Rwanda following the genocide there in 1994 and were killed during the civil war in Congo which led to President Laurent Kabila coming to power.

A UN report last month implicated Mr Kabila's forces and the Rwandan army in the killings.

Both have rejected the allegation.

The UN team which drew up the report said its investigations were repeatedly hampered by a lack of co-operation from Mr Kabila's government.

The team was withdrawn from Congo in April.
