First major survey of American Muslims
The first comprehensive survey of Muslims in America has been published, showing that the community has grown to more than six-million, with one-thousand-two-hundred mosques across the country. The findings by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, indicate that American mosques are less bound by ethnic and racial divisions than in the past and are adapting to American culture. The report excluded movements that mainstream Muslims don't consider as following true Islam, such as the black rights leader, Louis Farrakhan's Nation of Islam. The writers of the report said many Muslims remained ambivalent about America, admiring its technological advances while disparaging its culture. They also found that women attended Friday prayers and served on many governing boards of mosques. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
