UN accuses DR Congo of killings

A United Nations investigation is reported to have concluded that Rwandan Hutu refugees were systematically killed by forces loyal to President Kabila of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The UN team's long-awaited report is due to be presented to the Security Council today.

Reuters news agency says it implicates the Rwandan military as well as President Kabila's forces and calls for an international tribunal to find out which individuals were responsible for the massacres.

The report says attacks on refugee camps were intended to force the refugees to return to Rwanda but when some people fled to the interior they were hunted down.

The Hutu refugees fled Rwanda fearing revenge from the new mainly-Tutsi government for the 1994 genocide. The government in Kinshasa has denied involvement in the massacres.
