Shooting on Peru-Ecuador border

Ecuador has apologised to Peru after an Ecuadorean soldier shot dead a Peruvian officer along their border.

The Peruvian prime minister, Javier Perez de Cuellar, described the shooting as a regrettable incident.

He said it appeared due to drunkenness of one individual. Mr Perez de Cuellar said he didn't think the incident was linked to allegations that members of congress in Ecuador were bribed to support a peace agreement signed between the two countries in 1998.

The congress in Quito is sending a team to Lima to investigate the claims.
