People of Montserrat mark volcano anniversary

The people of the Caribbean island of Montserrat have been marking the first anniversary of an eruption which claimed the lives of twenty-three people.

Molten rock flowing at more than three-hundred kilometres an hour rendered all of the south of Montserrat uninhabitable.

Several thousand people fled to the north or left altogether.

A BBC correspondent on Montserrat says experts believe the volcano which began erupting in 1995 is calming down, which could allow people to return soon to the danger zone, which is currently sealed off.
