Peru court lifts Garcia corruption charge

Reports from Peru say the Supreme Court has annulled corruption charges against the former president, Alan Garcia, opening the way for his return from exile in Colombia.

The Court is reported to have acted following a recommendation by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

Mr Garcia was facing three separate charges relating to his term in office between 1985 and 1990.

Earlier this month, he registered as a candidate for presidential elections, which are scheduled to be held in April.

Mr Garcia says he will return to Peru in the coming days. The voting is to choose a successor to Alberto Fujimori, who was dismissed by the Peruvian Congress in November.
