Moroccan celebrates throne day

King Mohammed the Sixth of Morocco celebrates his first year on the throne today.

A BBC correspondent in Rabat says it's been a year which has seen an easing of the iron grip which marked the long rule of his father, the late King Hassan.

King Mohammed has promised to protect civil liberties and improve the country's record on human rights.

Yesterday, Moroccan media announced that he had pardoned nearly nine-hundred prisoners to mark the anniversary of his accession.

The king is expected to make a speech later today.
