BBC aid claim sparks Geldof fury

Bob Geldof has challenged the BBC to substantiate its report that millions raised for famine relief in Ethiopia were diverted to pay for weapons.

The campaigner, who led the Western relief effort in the 80s, said there was "not a shred of evidence" Band Aid or Live Aid money was siphoned off.

In an angry exchange, he challenged World Service Editor Andrew Whitehead to provide proof that the claims were correct.

The BBC said it was standing by the report.

Update 4 November 2010: The Assignment programme featured was the subject of a complaint by the Band Aid Trust, which was upheld by the BBC's Editorial Complaints Unit.
