Archive: Nelson Mandela speaks to world's press


Leading anti-apartheid campaigner Nelson Mandela has held his first news conference since being released from prison after 27 years.

Mr Mandela said that he had walked free into a very different South Africa and had been surprised by the number of white people who appeared to identify with his plight.
