Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan has addressed the nation after becoming acting president in the absence of Nigeria's ailing leader, Umaru Yar'Adua.

During his speech, Mr Jonathan spoke of "moving the country forward" and praised the people of Nigeria for their unity.

Parliament earlier voted to recognise Mr Jonathan as acting president.

Mr Yar'Adua has been in Saudi Arabia since November last year, receiving treatment for a heart condition.
