The new school term has been delayed in parts of Tanzania because thousands of people are living in school buildings after floods destroyed their homes. Soldiers have arrived in the central Kilosa district to build temporary accommodation for 9,000 people still taking refuge in classrooms. Kilosa has been worst hit by floods which have affected some 33,000 people around the country. The BBC's Josphat Mwanzi says many have been living rough for more than a week. Our reporter found some 125 people, including children and old people, staying in insanitary conditions in Lwamulilo primary school. The school's head teacher said some 500 pupils had not been able to attend their lessons as scheduled. One teacher complained that the delays to the new term would affect the children's education. The floods have also caused a nearby bridge to collapse, meaning that train services to parts of the country have been cancelled.
