Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua has claimed that the clashes in the northern part of the country, which have left at least 140 people dead, are "under control".

Speaking to reporters, he insisted that the government would "not tolerate any armed insurrection anywhere in this country", and added that surveillance would continue to "fish out any remnants of these elements and deal with them severely and promptly".
