In pictures: Uganda's changing climate

Aid agency Oxfam has released a report saying that climate change is shifting traditional seasons and increasing poverty. It says Uganda's Karamoja region is an example of the process in action. (Pictures: Oxfam).

In the villages of Karamoja, men still slaughter animals as offerings to their rain god. Water scarcity has always been a problem in their region, but local farmers say droughts now seem like an annual event.

Lourien Lokwareng, an elder in Nasapir village, said it was the fourth year running that the area had experienced long periods of drought. He says the community feels forsaken by the rain god.

The Karamojong people have traditionally moved their livestock long distances to find water - but Oxfam says those distances are getting longer as the climate becomes drier.

The veterinary officer for Kotido district said that animals are suffering increasingly from lung diseases brought on by the longer migrations.

Oxfam says villagers in the region are worsening climate change by chopping down trees to use as fuel and manufacture charcoal to sell.

The charity has given hundreds of saplings to women in the region to try to combat the impact of climate change. It wants the leaders of the world's rich nations to do more.
