Gabon jail protest turns 'deadly'

map

At least one person has been killed during a protest by prisoners in the Gabon capital Libreville, the interior minister says.

Andre Mba Obame earlier said that a group of inmates had taken wardens and female prisoners hostage and wanted to negotiate with the authorities.

The AFP news agency says paramilitary police have entered the building and troops are on standby.

Smoke was seen rising from the prison, which is said to be overcrowded.
