Ex-Sudanese leader Mirghani dies

Former President al-Mirghani of Sudan
Mr Mirghani of Sudan hailed from a prominent Sudanese family

Former Sudanese President Ahmed al-Mirghani has died in Egypt aged 67.

He was swept from office 19 years ago in a coup that brought the current President Omar al-Bashir to power.

Mr Mirghani was elected in 1986 - the last time Sudan has held national, multi-party elections. The cause of his death is unclear.

President Bashir joined mourners at Mr Mirghani's family mosque in Khartoum. The former leader was from one of Sudan's most prominent families.

One of his most notable achievement in office was to sign a peace deal in 1988 with John Garang, the leader of a rebellion in southern Sudan.

Mr Mirghani also served as ambassador to Cairo and was president of the Sudanese Islamic Bank.

His body is due to be flown from Egypt to Khartoum for burial on Wednesday.
