Israeli man is kidnapped in Ghana

Map of Ghana

Kidnappers have seized an Israeli businessman in Ghana and are demanding a ransom, according to officials.

The unknown kidnappers are seeking $300,000 (£188,000) for his release.

Ghana's National Security Coordinator Sam Amoo said the kidnappers contacted the businessman's relatives in Israel to demand their ransom.

Mr Amoo also said the man was abducted on Sunday and that a task force of various security agencies had been working to free him since then.

Mr Amoo gave no details about the Israeli's identity nor those of his abductors.

But according to the Jerusalem Post, the man is in his sixties and negotiations are being conducted via his business partner, who first reported the kidnapping.

Correspondents say kidnappings are rare in Ghana, in contrast to Nigeria where there have been hundreds in recent years.
