French inquiry on Rwanda to quiz top brass
The French parliamentary inquiry into the country's role in Rwanda at the time of the genocide of 1994 says it's planning to hear evidence from top military officials. The head of the inquiry Paul Quiles said they would be among fifty people to be called in the next three months. Some are to give testimony in public hearings, but others would speak behind closed doors at the government's request. The inquiry began early last month and has heard from six academics so far. In another development, the United Nations Security Council is considering re-opening an investigation into alleged illegal arms sales to Rwanda. A draft resolution, expected to be adopted late today, asks the Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, to identify those behind illegal arms supplies and find ways of dealing with the problem.
