DR Congo bans main human rights group

The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo has outlawed the country's main human rights group, AZADHO.

Speaking on state television, the Justice Minister, Mwenze Kongolo, said the group was involved in what he called political campaigns.

He gave other human rights goups three days in which to register with the authorities or face being outlawed.

Correspondents say AZADHO has been an outspoken critic of the government.

The group recently alleged that government troops had massacred more than three hundred civilians in a town in the east of the country while putting down a tribal rebellion earlier this year
