Two car bombs have exploded in the Algerian capital, Algiers, killing dozens of people. The attack targeted the country's Constitutional Court and the UN mission. Expressions of condemnation and shock were issued around the world.
UN SECRETARY GENERAL BAN KI-MOON
Words cannot express my sense of shock, outrage and anger at the terrorist attack on the United Nations mission in Algiers today.
This was an abjectly cowardly strike against civilian officials serving humanity's highest ideals under the UN banner - base, indecent and unjustifiable by even the most barbarous political standard.
Their sacrifice cannot and shall not be forgotten.
UN HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES, ANTONIO GUTERRES
The UN is an entity that works for world peace, an entity that tries to be an honest broker, especially when dealing with the humanitarian needs of refugees and other victims of violence and persecution.
This makes this type of attack even more absurd.
FRENCH PRESIDENT, NICOLAS SARKOZY
I conveyed to the Algerian President, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, France's friendship and solidarity, our determination to stand by all those who fight against these cowardly terrorists, who represent nothing else than a new form of human barbarity.
US NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL SPOKESMAN, GORDON JOHNDROE
We condemn this attack on the United Nations office by these enemies of humanity who attack the innocent.
The United States stands with the people of Algeria, as well as the United Nations as they deal with this senseless violence.
EUROPEAN UNION PRESIDENCY STATEMENT
These horrific attacks clearly demonstrate that terrorism is a threat to all states and to all peoples.
It poses a serious threat to our security, to the values of our democratic societies and to the rights and freedoms of people, especially through the indiscriminate targeting of innocent people.
No cause, no grievance, can justify acts of terrorism.
RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN
I would like to confirm Russia's determination to expand co-operation with friendly Algeria in the fight against new challenges and threats, extremism and terrorism, and on issues such as sustainable development, and stability and security for the peoples of the region and the world.
