Boy soldier condemned to death in DR Congo
A thirteen-year-old soldier has been condemned to death in the Democratic Republic of Congo after killing a Red Cross volunteer at a football match in the capital, Kinshasa. The killing happened after the Red Cross football team told the boy to leave the field. He was sentenced hours later by a military tribunal which held a pitch-side hearing. Prosecutors had called for life imprisonment, saying the army should exercise more control over young recruits. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
