UN resumes relief flights to Sudanese town

The United Nations has resumed relief flights to the southern Sudanese town of Wau, where several weeks of intense fighting has left the population desperately short of food and medicine.

The government says it's also opening the road to relief convoys.

Links to the town were cut off in early February when the rebel Sudan Peoples Liberation Army began a siege there.

The rebels have since been driven back by government troops but have made advances elsewhere.

Aid agencies estimate that four million people will be in need of relief assistance this year in southern Sudan, where the SPLA has been fighting for greater autonomy for the last fifteen years.
