A group of tourists, including 21 Italians, has been found after being kidnapped in south-eastern Niger, the Italian foreign ministry says.

A German member of the party managed to escape and sound the alarm, according to a statement released in Rome.

They were seized in a remote part of the Sahara Desert near Lake Chad.

Three years ago, more than 30 European tourists were captured by suspected militant Islamists in the border region of Niger and Algeria.

They were rescued in an operation by the Algerian military.
