Nigerian ethnic fighting flares

Ondo state has seen months of ethnic unrest

At least 20 people are reported to have died after renewed clashes between two ethnic communities in southern Nigeria.

Another 17 people are said to be missing.

The state-owned Daily Times said the fighting involving the Ijaws and Ilajes broke out last week near the Chevron oil plants in Ondo State.

Chevron has confirmed the death of one of its Nigerian employees, Chris Ikomi, who died in an exchange of fire between a military patrol and a group of youths.

Oil plant closed

The company says it has closed one of its oil installations until the security situation improves.

Fighting between the Ijaws and the Ilajes was also reported last month when the two groups clashed over land in the town of Apata which may contain significant oil reserves.

The violence has broken a temporary truce agreed in August in which the two sides agreed to respect each other's territory .
